My Review:
Cruel Enchantment is the second installment in Anya Bast's brilliant Dark Magick series. It is sizzling, passionate and engaging. Bast had my emotions rolling right along with our hero and heroine, Aeric and Emmaline. I am so excited to have found another awesome fae series.

Emmaline was once the Summer Queen's assassin, and now, centuries later, she is still trying to atone for the lives she took. She is now determined to find all the pieces that will help destroy the refuge in which the Phaendir have trapped her fellow fae- Piefferburg. With her unique ability for personal glamor, she has gotten close to the Phaendir and avoided being thrown into Piefferburg. But now she must enter Piefferburg of her own free will, glamored, to seek out Aeric the Blacksmith to build a special key that will open a chest that can move the fae one piece closer to freedom. Unfortunately for Emmaline, Aeric recognizes her through the glamor and kidnaps her almost immediately as she steps within Piefferburg walls, with every intention to murder her to avenge his deceased fiance. And he can't let that grudge go- not yet anyway, and especially not without all the gory details. So, can she do it? Can she convince Aeric to trust her, release the fae without blowing her cover to the Phaendir and escape with her life?

Emmaline was a magnificent character, tortured and complex. I loved reading about her past as an assassin- it magnified the fact that she has evolved and come a long way in all the centuries since she stopped living amongst the fae. Thankfully, Emmaline is a survivor and Aeric has a soft heart somewhere beneath his tough exterior, otherwise this couple would have never worked. In fact, it turns out they have explosive passion- the scenes when these two are alone are super sexy. Although this couple worked well together, I did find it a wee bit hard to swallow that Emmaline forgave and understood the reasoning behind Aeric's initial reaction to her, the way he treated her.

I could not put this book down, it was intense. I was so into the suspenseful relationship between Emmaline and the Phaendir. The Phaendir, the enemy... Gideon- he is severely evil. I kept biting my lip- is she going to get caught!? Are they going to let her back into Piefferberg?!

And although this book could be read as a stand-alone novel, you have to read Wicked Enchantment and the novella in Hot for the Holidays. They're just as good as this one. I can NOT WAIT for Anya to release the third novel in the Dark Magick series. This book is highly recommended to those that love the fae, romance, suspense and the paranormal. :)

Doesn't it sound amazing?

  1. I'm so jealous! Anya Bast is one of my favorite authors she always seems to mix the heat and the action just right if that makes sense? I've been looking forward to the book and now I'm even more excited.

    Have a great weekend!

  2. Hey, it comes out in like four days :) You don't have to wait too much longer! This was the first series I've read of Anya's.. she is definitely one of my favorites now too. Can't wait to read her Witch Fury series!!

  3. Great review J! I loved how you went into explaining the characters. You put great detail into it. Thanks, you made mine sound really plain. Some friend you are! ;)

  4. I LOVE Anya Bast, but haven't read this series. A definite TBR book. Great review as always!
