Temperance Dews, caretaker of the less fortunate and orphaned children of St. Giles, is in desperate need for a new patron of her home. If she can't find one she risks not only losing the home her family has desperately worked their entire lives to maintain, but the children living within will be thrown back to the terrifying and dangerous streets from which they were rescued. And then, just as she needs it- a bizarre opportunity is presented to her when she is approached by a mysterious Lord Caire. In return for her assistance in Lord Caire’s search for a vicious killer on the loose, he is willing to introduce Temperance to London’s wealthy community in hopes of securing a new patron for the home. It is an offer she can’t afford to refuse no matter the dangerous consequences she will face.  And through their journey together, Lord Caire and Temperance find more than what they've bargained for...

The characters in this plot were created with such vibrant, vulnerable personalities that you will find it impossible not to care about them. As a couple, Temperance and Lord Caire were wonderful- fitting together like puzzle pieces. The chemistry between the two at first was a little unstable, but as their relationship evolved it became more passionate.

This is simply an amazing story. I look forward to reading more from The Maiden Lane Series. Usually I have difficulty staying focused during historical romance novels but the writing was excellent and I could not put this book down. This is my first novel by Elizabeth Hoyt and after reading it I will be adding more of her books to my to-be-read pile. A definite must-read!
