About the Book:
Did you ever want a blowtorch for a finger? Meet Priscilla Sumner, an ordinary seventh grader with extraordinary gifts. As if middle school isn't hard enough, not only does Priscilla have to fight pimples and bullies, but genetically enhanced assassins trying to kill her and her family. Armed with wit, strength, and a genius best friend, Priscilla must defeat the Selliwood Institute, a mysterious organization with a mission of turning children into killing machines.
Today we're excited to interview the best friend of our wonderful heroine Priscilla-- Tai!
Hello, Tai! Welcome to Rex Robot Reviews! Can you tell us how you first met Priscilla and the fateful moment you became best friends?
Well, my adoptive parents and I moved to River’s Bend when I was eight. Before then, my parents were professors at American University in DC. If you know anything about DC, you know that there is a lot of culture there. So it was pretty easy to find people who could handle my kinky hair. But when we moved to River’s Bend, not so much. My parents tried to do my hair themselves. They’re white and in their sixties so the outcome was tragic to say the least. When I walked into my third grade classroom the only thing that kept me from crying was seeing this little red head girl with hair just as hopeless as mine. It was Priss and she had hair issues of her own. After laughing our butts off at each other we instantly became best friends.
I hear you have a great, relaxing rock collection! Do you have a couple rocks that you favor?
Oh, yes. When I was ten I won a competition for NASA and I got to meet Dr. Mae Jemison (She was the first African-American woman in space). She actually gave me a moon rock. Can you believe that?! It’s my most prized possession.
Tell us about yourself! Three things no one, maybe not even Priscilla, knows?
1. I have a huge crush on Joshua Sumner. He is like the perfect guy in my opinion. Priss will probably think that’s gross, but it’s soooo true. 2. When no one’s around, I like to take pop songs and replace the lyrics with the elements of the periodic table. 3. I hate frogs. They’re creepy!
When you first found out your best friend could spout fire from her fingers, what did you *really* think?
I thought she was completely insane. Seriously, I love Priss and all, but she does have a tendency to over exaggerate. I mean, once she called me over to her house because she was sure she was turning into a robot due to a strange solid growth on her leg. Turns out it was just a scab. Anyway, I thought she was just being dramatic, but I decided a long time ago to never write things off until I have experimental evidence. So I decided to wait and see the fire for myself before coming to a definitive conclusion.
If you could choose your superpower, what would it be and why?
I would like to be insomnia girl. If I never had to sleep I could get so much more accomplished!
Has Priscilla's brothers ever thrown you into the middle of a snot war?
Oh no, Charlie and Chester love me. Plus, I bribe them with candy when no one’s watching. It’s how I get all the dirt on Josh’s whereabouts. Wow, that sounded very stalkerish.
Being that you're River Bends smartest student, you've got to have some favorite books. What is some of your favorite literature?
I’m a huge math and science geek so my favorite books usually involve numbers and formulas. There’s this really awesome book about prime numbers called The Music of Primes. Prime numbers are sooo cool. And there’s this really cute book my parents used to read to me when I was a kid called The Number Devil. And I also love this fiction novel called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon. Oh, and Pillow Problems by Lewis Carroll is a collection of 72 math problems that I love to do when I can’t sleep. And when all else fails, I love to just sit back with a physics text book and read it cover to cover.
Thanks for joining us today, Tai! Any parting words of wisdom to our readers?
No words of wisdom but I would like to give a shout out to all my space camp friends: Live long and prosper, homies!
Check out Tai and the rest of the gang from River's Bend in Priscilla the Great!
