Into the Past
Author: Cindy Pon
As much as I love books and have been a big reader since I could read, I never read any that anyone who liked *me* in them. It's the reason that Malinda Lo and I decided to spearhead the Diversity Tour, to celebrate diversity in children's books and young adult novels. There is much more representation of cultures, races and sexual orientation within those genres these days, but there are still great strides to be made, I think. You can check us out at http://diversityinya.com --we'll be going on tour in May!
I would have loved to read Grace Lin and Lisa Yee's books at ages 5 and 12. Grace Lin wrote picture books such as The Year of the Dog and The Year of the Rat as well as Ling and Ting. Her fantasy novel, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a Newbery Honor. Lisa Yee has written Milicent Min, Girl Genius, Stanford Wong Flunks Big Time, and Good Lucky Ivy.
For my 16 and 19 year old selves, I only wish I had discovered Ursula Le Guin sooner than my early thirties! Her Earthsea series is amazing and The Left Hand of Darkness so thought provoking. She was definitely a trail blazer for women writers within speculative fiction.
Check out the trailer to my sequel of Silver Phoenix,
Fury of the Phoenix.
