Interview: Kristina - I'm Not Her by Janet Gurtler

I'm Not Her
by Janet Gurtler

About the Book:
Brainy Tess Smith is the younger sibling of the beautiful, popular, volleyball-scholarship-bound Kristina. When Kristina is diagnosed with bone cancer, it drastically changes both sisters' lives. Sometimes the things that annoy us the most about our siblings are the ones we'd miss the most if we lost them.

In this YA literary coming-of-age novel that will appeal to readers who love Jodi Picoult and Sarah Dessen, sisters Tess and Kristina discover not only who they are, but who they can become.

Character Interview: Kristina

Hi, Kristina! Welcome to Rex Robot Reviews! We're so glad to have you here. Can you tell us three fun facts about yourself?
Um. I don’t want to be rude and all, but I have cancer. What fun facts can there really be at this point in my life? Not convinced? Okay. How about this.
1. Bald saves a lot of time on hair styling.
2. I have started watching Myth Busters with my sister, Tess
3. My second toes are way longer than my big toes.

What was the first thing you thought when you found out you were diagnosed with cancer?
The first very first thought I had, was that it had to be a mistake. Maybe they mixed up my file or something. When I realized it was true, my first thought was that I didn’t want to die. Not yet. I felt too young to die.

Do you have any advice for other athletes and their families that are going through the same things you went through?
Wow. First of all let me tell them that I’m not going to lie. It’s going to be hard. And it’s going to suck.  Chemo is not fun. There might even be sometimes when you just want to kind of, die. But. In the end survival instinct seems to kick in or come back and life starts to make sense in a totally different way. I guess there always has to be hope and though our lives have been completely altered, there will be new paths to take.

Let's get away from the heavy stuff- what are your top five favorite movies?
In Her Shoes, 27 Dresses, Practical Magic, The Notebook, Ten Things I Hate About You

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Is there a superpower that re-grows limbs? I’d take that one. Or maybe invisibility. That might be cool to try out.

What are three songs that we could find on the soundtrack to your life?
Before or After?
Get the Party Started by Pink
I’m A Survivor by Destiny’s Child
Good Bye by Avril Lavigne

Thank you for stopping by, Kristina!

Look for my review of I'm Not Her on May 2nd! I really enjoyed this story, it was raw, engaging and frustrating. I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 Robots.

  1. Thanks for the interview with poor Kristina.

I must say, I am very curious to read your review of I'm Not Her! (I want to read about the frusterating part ;)

  2. I won't be able to say exactly what was frustrating for me because it is a spoiler. It has to do with Kristina... the end... I was like MAN can't this girl catch a break? haha, but it was great too because I was totally surprised. I looked at my man and said oh my gosh you won't believe what just happened in my book. Sigh. I was a little depressed. haha
