Giveaway & Interview with Jennifer Estep!

About the Book:
My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why—especially since I should have been the one who died...

Hi, Jennifer! We're so excited to have you here again. You're newest series, Mythos Academy, debuts this July with Touch of Frost - can you tell us a little bit about Gwen Frost?
Hi, Julia! Thanks so much for having me on the blog again. I really appreciate it. ;-)

Touch of Frost is the first book in my Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series. The books focus on Gwen Frost, a 17-year-old Gypsy girl who has the gift of psychometry, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen is shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, Amazons, and more.

In Touch of Frost, Gwen is getting used to going to a new school and trying to figure out how she fits in with the other warrior whiz kids, as she calls them. Gwen doesn’t think that she belongs at Mythos Academy, but when a girl is murdered in the Library of Antiquities, Gwen decides to use her psychometry magic to figure out who killed the girl and why. Of course, Gwen gets into a lot of trouble along the way, but she finds herself being helped out of it by Logan Quinn, a Spartan guy who is as cute as he is deadly.

Touch of Frost will be out on July 26, while First Frost, a prequel e-story to the series, is available now.

Your Elemental Assassin series is one of my absolute favorite Urban Fantasy series! What is the most difficult thing when transitioning from writing such a dark Urban Fantasy series to writing a Young Adult Urban Fantasy series?
Thanks! I appreciate that. I would say the most difficult thing was really trying to capture and write in a young adult voice. My young adult heroine Gwen is just starting out at Mythos Academy, learning about her magic, and dealing with her mom’s recent death. Gwen’s not nearly as confident as the assassin heroine of my adult series, so it was a fun challenge to write from a different point of view for a character who’s just starting out and trying to find her place in the world.

But I think folks who like my Elemental Assassin adult series will find a lot to like in the Mythos Academy young adult series too. Both series feature a strong, sassy heroine, magic, lots of fight scenes, and even a little romance. The Mythos Academy books are just a little lighter in terms of the sex, language, and violence, but I still think they’re fun, action-packed reads.

What kind of research did you find necessary for the Mythos Academy series?
I did some research about various gods, goddesses, myths, and monsters to get an idea which ones would fit in with the story that I wanted to tell and the kind of magic/world building that I wanted to do. Then, I just let my imagination run wild and put my own spin on things. I hope everyone has as much fun reading the books as I did writing them.

What songs would you include on the sound track for Touch of Frost?
“Smile Like You Mean It” by The Killers; “I Do Not Hook Up” by Kelly Clarkson; and “Human” by The Pretenders. Gwen and I are both pretty eclectic when it comes to our tastes in music.

The cover for Touch of Frost is just gorgeous. Did you have any influence on the cover?
Thanks! I like the cover a lot too. After I see the cover, I usually send my editor a few small thoughts or suggestions, but I’ve been very pleased with the covers so far. I’ve already seen the preliminary cover for Kiss of Frost, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s really striking and perfectly captures the story and what happens in that book.

What are you top five favorite books or movies involving mythology?
In no particular order, I would say:
  1. The old Clash of the Titans movie with Harry Hamlin – We watched this one several times whenever we had a movie day at school.
  2. The movie 300 – It doesn’t get any better than Gerard Butler and his abs.
  3. The myth of Psyche and Eros (Cupid) – This one isn’t exactly a book, but I think it’s a cool story because Psyche goes through so much to be with Eros. Plus, this story is often told as or presented as having a fairy tale quality, and I also love fairy tales, along with mythology.
  4. American Gods by Neil Gaiman – Gaiman serves up his own take on gods, myths, and more. Plus, the book has a mystery subplot with a really great twist near the end.
  5. Xena: Warrior Princess – I know it’s a TV show and not a movie, but I loved Xena because she was such a great heroine. Plus, there were a lot of fun takes on various gods, goddesses, and myths.
I have read and *loved* Touch of Frost... is there ANYTHING at all you can tell us about Kiss of Frost? Please? :)
Glad you enjoyed the book. In Kiss of Frost, Gwen deals with the fallout from what happens in Touch of Frost (which I won’t spoil here). She also struggles to deal with her feelings toward Logan. Basically, in Kiss of Frost, the students and staff at Mythos Academy go to a ski resort for the annual Winter Carnival – and Gwen realizes that there’s a Reaper of Chaos who doesn’t want her to make it back to the academy alive.

Kiss of Frost will hit shelves on Nov. 29, while the third book in the series, Dark Frost, will be out in 2012.

What are three fun facts about Gwen that we wouldn't know from reading Touch of Frost?
Gwen loves oldies music; she secretly wishes she had a pet; and she likes dressing up and being a girly-girl every once in a while.

Thank you so much for coming by! Can't wait to see what comes next in both the Elemental Assassin series AND Mythos Academy!!
Thanks for having me here! Happy reading, everyone! ;-)
