Welcome, Ednah! We are so excited to have you. Can you tell us a little bit about your newest release, Betrayed?
If you haven’t read AWAKENED, spoiler alert!!! BETRAYED picks up six months after the story of AWAKENED ends. In AWAKENED we learned that Bran Llyr was born and raised among demons—the Nephilim, who go after human souls and cause mayhem around the world. He did his share of it, too. To rescue his younger sister from an evil demoness, he risked being vanquished and sought help from the Guardians—the good Nephilim who guard humans and destroy demons on a daily basis. What he didn’t plan on was meeting a girl of his dreams, Lil Falcon, and falling in love.
But Lil is no ordinary Guardian. Her father is a nature-bender demon, which makes her powers unique. Throw in the fact that she is the wielder of the Nephilim’s most powerful weapon, the Kris Dagger, and you have a powerful girl both the Guardians and the demons want on their side.
At the end of AWAKENED, Lil barely discovered who her father is and that he is still alive after the battle on Coronis Island, Bran is part of the Guardians and he admits his feelings for Lil.
In BETRAYED, Bran and Lil find out that falling in love is about the most dangerous thing they have ever done. Someone very close to Lil is willing to use Bran and his past to play mind games with Lil and lure her to the dark side. Not sure who to trust, Lil and her Guardian friends struggle to find out who the traitor is. To make matters worse, Bran becomes distant and Lil’s best friend refuses to have anything to do with her. It takes everything Lil has to find answers. The truth, when she finally learns it, will test her strength and her faith in those she loves.
Could you tell us a little bit about your world building and writing process?
I did quite a bit of research on the Nephilim and their powers, relying on online resources and the Book of Enoch to make the Guardians come alive and their existence believable. In every culture, ancient civilization and mythology are powerful gods and goddesses with magical powers who either forced humans to worship them or sided with humans. I blended their abilities and the Biblical Nephilim to build the Guardian world.
I’m not big on plotting a story though I do write an outline, a sketchy one, and put down my characters’ goals and motives. I also usually know exactly how I want the story to starts and ends. The in-between is hard to predict because once the character take over, scenes are added and deleted, subplots appear when you least expect them. But the beginning and the ending remains the same.
Were any of your characters a particular challenge during the writing process?
Gavyn, Bran’s brother. I didn’t know what to do with him in book 2 although I knew what he will do in Book 3. I thought and thought, but couldn’t come up with a subplot for him. So I just started writing. By the third chapter, his sister gave me the solution.
The other one was Dante. As Lil’s dad’s right hand man, he’s a demon. But as the story progressed, he surprised me, and I ran with it. I’m happy with the way he turned out and can’t wait to meet him in book 3.
What songs could we find on Lil's favorite playlist?
Bring Me Back to Life by Evanescence
My Last Breath by Evanescence
Breathless by Shayne Ward
Nightwish by Amaranth
Amazed by Lonestar
Take my Breath Away by Berlin
Eye of the Tiger by Survivor because it is one of Bran’s favorite.
What one scene from Betrayed that you love and could never cut?
There are several, but I love the scene on top of the mountain in Hawaii. It shows how vulnerable Bran is and how much he worries about things. One day I’ll publish his journals, so readers can hear his thoughts.
Are there any other releases or works in progress that you're excited about?
I’m excited about Book 3, which is coming along nicely. I’m also working on Guardian Academy book that’s a spin-off the Guardian Legacy. They involve the Brotherhood—the neutral Nephilim who are part Nephilim and part human beings.
