Book Summary:
Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

My Thoughts:
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is breathtaking and absolutely refreshing - a dream to those of us captivated by the dystopian genre. For the first 150 pages I was worried this book would not live up to its hype- but then all of a sudden BAM I am totally intoxicated, didn't put the book down. The second half of this book is amazing. Intense. I held my breath and lost sleep over it. SO worth it.

The characters of Shatter Me are fascinating, plain and simple. Warner, the villain, is power hungry- wants to get his hands on anything- or anyone- that will make him stronger. Though he is evil, there is something incredibly intriguing about his personality. Ugh, he is so sadistic. He is a psycho and the gentleness he shows towards Juliette, our heroine, is confusing. It makes you wonder what made him the way he is... Which leads us to our leading man, Adam. Adam is smart, romantic- brave- I love him. He protects those he cares about unconditionally. Le sigh.

Juliette. I was incredibly sad while reading her back story. Her childhood is horrific, even as a toddler her parents were scared of her and didn't show her love. Not to mention that she hasn't touched anyone within 264 days when the book begins. I adore that she recognizes everything she has been through, and isn't completely broken despite. She's a survivor, fights on. Juliette never takes the easy path and she never seems to lose hope either. Did I mention that she is very easy to like and even relate to? Well, she is!

The secondary characters and plot are both brilliant as well. Mafi knows what she is doing with these characters... And the plot? Wowza. Intense. Exquisitely written. So vivid. I thought I was escaping right alongside Adam and Juliette. I'm really excited about the end, it had an X-men feel to it, and I'm a huge X-men fan.

This is one of my top reads of 2011- a magnificent debut novel. Shatter Me is a must read. I can't do this book justice- hence the shabby review. Haha. Everyone should give this book a shot- it lived up to its hype. I can't believe I'm going to have to wait for book number two. It is going to be a long, painful wait.
