I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but the shallow part of me is totally drawn to some books because of their gorgeous covers. This is one of those books. It just screams "READ ME!" And it isn't bad, but it isn't great either.
Lucinda Price (Luce) is a 17 year old girl who is sent to reform school after a horrible accident at her old school. There she meets Daniel Grigori and is instantly drawn to him, but he isn't interested. Luce finds that Daniel seems really familiar, like she knows him from somewhere. She starts going out of her way to find out more about him. And then strange and dangerous events start happening, putting Luce's life in danger.
This book has a lot of potential. The set up is interesting and the teenage angst is bearable. The plot starts a little slow, but picks up a lot of speed at the end. The characters are a lot of fun. I particularly like Ariane, who takes Luce under her wing. Ariane is slightly unhinged and I love it.
Now Luce is about as exciting as tofu. She really doesn't have many thoughts other than "why does Daniel hate me?" Lauren Kate could have done so much more with her character. Luce is one of those protagonists that just reacts to things that happen around her. All the interesting parts really have nothing to do with her feelings or thoughts. It is really frustrating. Not every female young adult protagonist needs to be strong, but they should at least have a personality!
Also, be warned. This is the first book in a four part series. Do not expect any answers. You won't get any. You barely find anything out at the end and will leave with more questions. I would imagine answers will be doled out over the course of the next three books, so if you need to know "why" then you might be in it for the long haul!
Books in this series in the order that they should be read:
3.5 Fallen in Love
4. Rapture (expected publication 2012)
