Book Summary:
Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer... and becoming his prey herself

Shannon's Thoughts:
I have been hearing such good things about this series and with the final book coming out this year, I wanted to give it a go.  All in all, it wasn't bad.  But I wasn't in love with with it either.  On the plus side,  I thought the premise was really cool.  I liked the idea of Violet's ability to see/hear death echoes and the imprints left on murderers.  It was a different take on psychic abilities. I also really liked Violet's crush on her best friend, Jay.  I thought Derting did a good job of writing about Violet's budding feelings for her long time friend and how it effects their relationship.  It was believable and I really felt for Violet as she struggled with her feelings.  In fact, the first half of the book was really good.  It was intense, both with the killer and with Jay.

But at some point it started to go downhill a bit.  I felt like Derting wasn't quite sure where to go so she pulled out every cliche and troupe she could think of.  The mystery ended up being really predictable and there were some extremely cliched moments between Jay and Violet (staircase scene, anyone?).  It gave it an aura of "Fan Fiction" and I felt it lacked originality. Which was too bad because I think the concept was original and the story had strong start.  I would love to see where Derting takes her series and if some of the kinks get worked out.

Books in the series in the order they should be read:
1. The Body Finder
2. Desires of the Dead
3. The Last Echo
4. Dead Silence (publication expected in April)

  1. This is a series I've heard a lot of good things about, and I've kind of stayed away because I'm scared to check it out with how many people rave about it. It definitely sounds interesting, and I hope the series gets better for you! I will keep this in mind and see if I like it.
