Shannon's Thoughts:
Reached is the final book in the Matched series.  The three main characters, Cassia, Ky and Xander are all separated on different missions for The Rising.  They remain separated for a good chunk of the book, but do eventually all come together.  We also learn more about the history of The Society and The Rising and just what those little pills are for.

There is no doubt that Ally Condie writes beautifully. But I would be lying if I didn't say I was just a little bored. Part of the problem is that this book centers on finding the cure for a plague epidemic. Most of the talk is about the plague, the symptoms of the plague, how the plague mutated, how the plague spread, how someone is immune to the plague, etc etc. I would rather the book focused more  what the first book was about: freedom of choice and the freedom to love who you choose.

I did enjoy the addition of Xander's narration.  It was nice to hear his thoughts and feelings, especially since Xander's story is arguably the most interesting of the three.  But I did find the three POVs were too similar in style and sometimes I had a hard time telling who was narrating.

Lastly, the one thing I really loved (and you don't see often in YA), is that Cassia and Ky remain devoted to one another throughout the whole series.  I commend Condie for avoiding needless relationship drama.  Even with Xander back in the picture.

All in all, I think the series on a whole is a great series.  I think Reached had a very satisfying ending even if the direction of the book was not always my cup of tea.  I leave the series feeling good about where the characters are and where they are going.
Books in the series in the order they should be read:
1. Matched
2. Crossed
3. Reached

  1. I enjoyed this book too but you're right. All the focus on finding the cure was a little much for me!
