Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make Me NOT Pick Up A Book:
I will generally read anything with good reviews, even if it is something I normally would shy away from. But if I was in a library, scanning the shelves, these are the books I would shy away from:
1. Anything that says something like "For Fans of Twilight...."
Sorry. That is not an endorsement to me.
I am VERY picky about this genre. I have read some I enjoyed, but usually they need to be in small doses. But books like Confessions of a Shopaholic don't usually interest me.
I just don't really like the whole Zombie genre. It is kind of gross and it is all kind of the same. Plus I do not like the idea of zombie children. It bothers me...a lot.
Aliens can be a toughy for me too. Some are done really well (like The 5th Wave, The Knife of Never Letting Go), but others...not so much. I just hate it when it turns into an us vs. them kind of thing with the military and blah blah blah.
I prefer it when they just turn into wolves, not as much when they turn into slobbering beasts. But generally I don't seek this genre out too much.
6. Anything 50 Shades of Grey-ish
I'm not a prude, but no. Just, no.
7. "Issues" books
I can be kind of shallow and I don't like depressing books. Especially when they take on one topic like suicide, anorexia, abuse, etc. There is so much of that in the real world, that it just isn't something I want to read about.
8. Drug Use
This falls under "issues book" but it gets its own line. I do not understand drug subculture. I don't relate to it. I have no desire to read about addiction or drug abuse.
9. Parenting Books
I read a couple parenting book while pregnant. Once my daughter was born I realized that parenting books were more annoying than helpful. I am a big believer in parenting from your gut and knowing that every kid and every situation is different. Parenting books want to fit your child into their definition. I could write a whole ranting about parenting issues, but I will spare you all!
10. Cozy Mysteries
You know. The ones with the cutesy covers and punny titles. They are just a little too fluffy for me. I really liked them when I was 12, but now I prefer hefty mysteries and thrillers.
