Top Ten Tuesday: Unfortunate Character Names

Top Ten Unfortunate Character Names

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish

1. Deuce from The Razorland Series
I'm apparently a 12 year old boy and can only think of one thing when I see this name.  And even worse that it is a girl's name.

2. Wanda from The Host
Wanda?  Really?  THAT'S the best you can do?  (Apologies to real life Wandas)

3. The Bell Twins: Cricket and Calliope from Lola and the Boy Next Door
At least they BOTH have unique names, but I would have a hard time crushing on a boy named Cricket.

4. America Singer from The Selection
Do they even remember America the country?

5. Sophronia from Etiquette and Espionage
Why?

6. Tobias from Divergent
He will always be Four to me.  Also, I've seen way too much Arrested Development and that is all I can think of when I see Tobias.

7. Blaze from Blaze (or Love in the Time of Supervillains)
I know she was named after Johnny Blaze by her comic book loving father, but he couldn't come up with a better name?

8. Penny Lane from The Lonely Hearts Club
Again, named after her parents' obsession, The Beatles.  I can accept Penny Lane as a first and middle name.  I cannot accept Penny Lane as her whole first name.

9. McLean from What Happened to Goodbye?
I'm sensing a trend, because here is another girl named by her dad after one of his passions.  In this case college basketball and she is named after a legendary coach.  Sigh.

10. Penryn from Angelfall
It's not that I dislike the name exactly, but I would like it a lot better in say, a fantasy novel.  As it stands, it is so unique and stands out awkwardly among the other usual names.

  1. When I see the name Cricket, I immediately think of the character Cricket from The Young and the Restless, whose real name is Christine. It's a very unfortunate nickname. The name McLean is also stupid. Can we please have a rest to the Mc/Mac names for girls?

I kinda like the name Sophronia, since it's so distinguished, well outside the Top 100, and from Ancient Rome. Sophronia is the full name of Phronsie Pepper, the youngest of the five children in the old Five Little Peppers series.

    1. Ahhh, I didn't realize Sophronia was Roman. That makes me slightly more agreeable to it. However, it did not fit with the character at all. :)

  2. 1. Oh my GOD how much I agree with these. And I'm a twelve year old boy right with you. That name reaaaallllly doesn't work for me

    2. I literally laughed so hard upon reading the bit about Tobias that I scared my cat away. Oh my god I'm still picturing Tobias from Arrested Development being all strong and broody hahahahahaha

  4. Great pick. I LOVE YOUR PICKS!!! Tobias... every time it says Tobias, I just read it as Four because otherwise I think of AD too. I have out off reading Lola and the Boy Next Door because of the stupid names - Cricket is a sport or a bug, not something you should name your child... and Calliope, seriously?!? America Singer makes me cringe every time... she's from America and she's a singer... the author had to think super hard when naming her. Nice list :) My TTT.
