Book Summary:
Bones meets Fringe in a big, dark, scary, brilliantly-plotted urban thriller that will leave you guessing until the very end.

Nearly Boswell knows how to keep secrets. Living in a DC trailer park, she knows better than to share anything that would make her a target with her classmates. Like her mother's job as an exotic dancer, her obsession with the personal ads, and especially the emotions she can taste when she brushes against someone's skin. But when a serial killer goes on a killing spree and starts attacking students, leaving cryptic ads in the newspaper that only Nearly can decipher, she confides in the one person she shouldn't trust: the new guy at school—a reformed bad boy working undercover for the police, doing surveillance. . . on her.

Nearly might be the one person who can put all the clues together, and if she doesn't figure it all out soon—she'll be next.

Shannon's Thoughts:
Well, I nearly loved this book.  Har, har.  I don't know what it was exactly, but while the premise was incredibly interesting, I wasn't really drawn into the book until well past halfway.  I never really connected with Nearly.  I didn't get a lot of emotional response from her, so I felt a bit held at arm's length.  But, there was enough going on with the rest of the story that kept me reading.  My favorite was probably the relationship between Nearly and her best guy friend.  He has feelings for her, but she doesn't reciprocate them.  It was sad and a little awkward, but realistic too.

As far as the romance was alright. I'm not generally a fan of the "bad boy" who is mean to the girl troupe.  Reece did manage to grow on me a bit...considering how complicated their situation was.  But it did end on a sweet note and I was happy with that.

The mystery is very twisted and intense.  I think some readers will make a guess at the murder, but I really didn't know who it was until the reveal.  I'm not sure I completely buy it, but points for surprising me, I guess.

Lastly, this book has a small paranormal aspect.  Nearly can "taste" people's emotions when she touches them.  I always like an empathetic paranormal power, but in this case, it felt slightly extraneous.  There wasn't enough of an emphasis on it for it to be the primary focus of the book.  And because of that, I felt like the same effects could be achieved through other means besides this paranormal trick.

Overall, I thought it was a good, intense mystery.  I liked some of the side stories and I liked the setting a lot.  I recommend giving this book a read if you like mystery thrillers.
