Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Should Have Put Down

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish

The original prompt was top ten books that I almost put down but didn't.  But the problem is I either DO put them down or I skim through them really fast to get it over with.  Rarely would I consider those books to be "top ten" material.  So I decided to change the topic up a little and give you my top ten books that I SHOULD have put down.

1. Allegiant by Veronica Roth
I'm still mad about this one.  And it isn't just the ending...it's the whole thing.

Allegiant (Divergent, #3)

2. Bellman & Black by Diane Setterfield
I was really excited about this because I loved The Thirteenth Tale, but this one left me scratching my head and wondering what the point was.  Nothing happens!

Bellman & Black: A Ghost Story

3.  A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
I know this won awards, but I just didn't like it.  I kept hoping it would get better...but nope.

A Visit from the Goon Squad

4. Indian Killer by Sherman Alexie
I had to read this book for American Indian Lit in college, but I felt deeply disturbed by it.  It was so, so angry.

Indian Killer

5. Wicked by Gregory Maguire
I literally have no idea what was going on in this book.  I don't understand why everyone likes it so much.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wicked Years, #1)

6. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
I HATED Jace.  And I was deeply uncomfortable with the "twist" regarding Jace and Clary.  Ew.

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)

7. Swamplandia! by Karen Russell
I had very strong feelings about some of the things that happen in this book.  And none of it good.

 8. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
This is another book that makes me angry.  I can't talk about without going on a rant.

Thirteen Reasons Why

9. Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman
We read this for book club and I have zero sympathy for Piper after reading it.  I haven't watched the tv show but from what I've heard, it is pretty different.  Thank god.

Orange Is the New Black

 10. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
That ending.  No.  Just no.

Bridge to Terabithia

  1. YAY! I am happy I wasn't the only one who changed it to the top ten I should have put down. I am the same as you, if I wanted to put a book down then it's not really good enough to be a Top pick. I AM SO MAD AT ALLEGIANT! That was my top pick too, everyone moans about the ending but it distracts from the fact that the whole book was boring, awful and kind of her just regurgitating storylines from book 2. I saw Thirteen Reasons Why on someone else's list. I remember kind of enjoying the book and liking Clay but I hated Hannah. I didn't get her reasoning or what she did at all. Nice picks! Here's my TTT.

  2. Oh my god yes! I thought I was the only one who felt that way about Wicked and Thirteen Reasons Why! Gregory Maguire is definitely for people of a certain taste, and I'm borderline there. I loved his Confessions of a Step Sister, but Mirror, Mirror was downright disturbing and Wicked was just....confusing haha. And I never say anything about Thirteen Reasons Why because it seems like everyone loved it and found it this great life changing book...but I definitely didn't. We seem to be big minorities for those two lol

    1. I actually read Maguire's other books first and then finally got around the Wicked and I was basically like "What fresh Hell is this?!" the whole time. Like the part with the clock? What was going on with the clock and the person sleeping in it? I don't like it when books make me feel stupid. LOL. Thirteen Reasons Why mad me SO SO angry. But I have a hard time reviewing books like that because I don't want to stomp all over someone's else feelings of depression...but I don't think the things that happened to Hannah were THAT horrible. Plus, she lost me when she was at the party and a girl is being raped in front of her but she was too depressed to go anything about it?! She was more upset about being on a list than the fact that she didn't stop a rape?! I can't. I just can't. I'm all worked up now! LOL!

  3. Same here. I completely disliked Thirteen Reasons Why. Don't get the hype :/

  4. I second your thoughts on Wicked. I finished it, but I didn't get what everybody loved so much. That said, it did make for an awfully good musical...
